Qualifications of a Productive Transcriptionist (courtesy of http://archiedelara.com/)
There are several qualifications necessary to become a successful transcriptionist. Although a lot of people said that transcription job does not require a skill and talent, it is too good to be true because it requires a lot. To become a productive transcriptionist, you should not be only good in typing but also you should have a good command of the English language. Aside from those listening skills, proofreading skills, computer literacy, professional attitude and characteristics are also needed to succeed in this career. Not to forget that appropriate software and equipment are equally important also.
Speedy typing. From the several factors that I mentioned above, I will further explain what is the benchmark for each skill. Typing speed matters because you still have to devote your time in proofreading, editing and re-listening to any parts of the audio that you didn’t get the first time. So, the faster you can type the better. About 45 wpm or above is sufficient for transcription but of course with minimal errors or much better if it is error free.
Adept English comprehension. You should have a strong grasp of the English language particularly the spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. You will not only be dealing with simple files but as well as complex files so you must know the rules in English structures.
Excellent listening skills. Listening with comprehension is necessary to be able to use the context for transcribing accurately. Never guess at spellings and capitalization. You should be very resourceful and look for every word that is not familiar to you.
Be committed. Positive motivation is what drives you to become a productive transcriptionist. You do not work only for yourself but for your clients. You must work independently without distractions. Finish the job within the deadline that is given to you. Be well disciplined and focused.
